We are a school system also, and elected to use the room resource option for similar situations. it requires no sharing for users to view it,... just a few instructions on how to add it to their calendar group. Setup is simple also. The only drawback I'm aware of for us has been with using the Outlook 2013 client. We've had a few users with rights to post to the calendar that get an access denied error using that client, but I think we've worked through most of that now. I would suggest that it's worth creating the calendar this way and experimenting with a few users. That's the approach we took initially and we receved good feedback. We use some now for reserving training rooms, one for showing professional development activities, and some schools use one as their school calendar..
